And the WHO (World Health Organization) and the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and ANY other government funded and run health organization that is going to tell me the risks of using e-cigarettes. Here’s the bottom line. I CHOOSE TO SMOKE! Yes, I’ve tried to quit many times and several different ways to prolong my health. I KNOW THE RISKS! You’ve spent billions making sure that we all do. Yet there are over a BILLION people in the world that still smoke for one reason or another.
Consider if you will some numbers.
Assume that each ‘smoker’ in these numbers consumes 15 cigarettes per day.
Assume that each e-cig cartridge delivers on the specs and replaces 15 cigarettes per cartridge.
if 1 smoker is 15 butts per day; that is 5,475 butts per year per smoker.
if there are 47 million smokers in the US alone (2006 stats); they generate 257 BILLION butts per year.
I had a couple of experiences today that made me appreciate the concept of the e-cig even more today. I am, of course, waiting for the arrival of mine but as I was driving around today, I seemed to be more aware of the things that I will NOT experience with e-cigs. Of course, there’s the chemicals, and the smoke, and all of the benefits we’ve already talked about, but this morning I was clearly reminded of the other indirect threats that smoking can put in our paths. In my car earlier, I decided to have a smoke. It was a nice day, but breezy, and I had my windows open of course to release the smoke from my car (not that it really helps all that much). I had to, for a couple of seconds, revert to driving with my knee while I had to use both hands to light a cig. It’s a practice that I’ve done so many times in the past without thought, that I just had to take pause for a moment today and wonder just how often I actually do it. And I didn’t realize the real risks until well after my second or third drag.
So I hit the buy button this afternoon to order my starter pack and my first mixed carton of cartridges from Blu today. With the 25 included cartridges in the starter pack, this order will arrive with 50 cartridges – or the equivalent of about 30 packages of cigarettes – for just $90 US. Hmmm… I WISH I could get regular smokes for only $3 per pack! And the thing is, that if this goes well, and I continue to get more, it’s even cheaper next time, when I get 50 cartridges alone for a mere $50 US. This makes the ‘per pack’ cost of my nicotine addiction drop from $9 to somewhere closer to $2 per pack! I’m excited about all of this and looking forward to my first shipment to arrive. The email I received warns that they are back-ordered a little due to high demand, so I hope that it’s not much more than the normal 10 day delivery expected. But stay tuned and I’ll let you know when I receive my starter pack and follow along as I discover this cool new alternative to conventional smoking. In the meantime, I might just install a ‘smoking calendar’ to track how many conventional smokes I consume in a given day. Could be interesting and scary at the same time. And… just as a bonus I realized another benefit of e-cigs that will lower my costs. I’ve crushed out no less than 6 half cigs so far today, and I’ve left 2 to burn down in the ashtray unattended. That’s nearly 4 whole smokes gone that I didn’t even take a drag from. That’s $2 right there, and it’s not even 4pm yet! Hmmmm….
Yes, I am a smoker. I’ve been cursed with this addiction since the 1977, and have tried in vain just about every remedy known to stop smoking. But every time, and every EXPENSIVE method I’ve tried I’ve ended up coming back to it. Most dramatic was my heart attack in December of 2007, which one would think would have given me good reason to stop. I’ve done everything else. I’ve lost weight – nearly 40 pounds and 8 inches at the waist! I’ve learned to eat foods that are heart healthy and have lowered my stress levels. I’ve continued to exercise more than I used to. Perhaps not perfect at any of these things, but I’m working to be a healthier person. So why can’t I quit smoking!? Maybe, deep down, I don’t want to. But more likely, I’ve had a physical and mental habit that has been a part of my lifestyle and is so deeply ingrained in my daily activities that I just CAN’T get past some of the patterns and I end up buying another pack of cigarettes. But now… there’s something new!
I am setting up this separate area of my site to enable myself to better track and share my experiences with e-cigs. This blog is being started on the 20th of June, 2009, and while largely for my own needs, it will hopefully help others to learn more about e-cigs, and perhaps to make a decision about them based on my experiences. I am ordering my first product kit today, so there will be only this and my initial Treatise on here for about 2 weeks. As soon as I receive my starter kit, the posts will start to flow. I invite you to read, comment, share and explore with me. The greatest part of any journey is the people we meet along the way, so I most sincerely hope that you will join me in my journey and that you will learn from it.
Cheers!
